Tracking keyword rankings
Track keyword rankings: see your Google rank and whether AI assistants cite you, side by side in one clear view.
What this shows
Keywords tracks where your site ranks on Google for the search terms you care about. Add the keywords your customers actually type, and LumaRank checks your position every day and shows how it moves over time.
Each keyword row shows its current Google position, how it changed over the last week, a mini trend line, and how much monthly search volume the term gets.
How to read it
- Google is your current position. Green means you're in the top 10, amber the top 20, red beyond that. A dash means the keyword hasn't been checked yet, or your site isn't in the results we scan.
- Δ 7d is the change versus a week ago. A green ▲ means you moved up (a better, lower position); a red ▼ means you slipped.
- Trend is a small line of your recent positions so you can spot momentum at a glance.
- Volume and Diff. estimate how many people search the term each month and how competitive it is.
- The strip at the top summarizes the whole set: your average position, how many keywords sit in the top 3 and top 10, and how many keywords you're tracking against your plan.
Keyword opportunities turns your keywords into a prioritized to-do list. It highlights two kinds of wins:
- Keywords where you already rank well on Google but AI assistants don't cite you yet: you have the search visibility, so the opportunity is to earn the AI mention.
- High-volume keywords where a better Google rank is within reach.
Each opportunity explains why it matters and what to do next, and clicking one opens that keyword's details. The most promising sit at the top, and they also show up in your Actions view alongside the rest of your recommendations.
The position distribution groups your keywords by where they rank. Keywords that haven't been checked yet appear under Unscanned rather than being counted as low-ranking.
Google rank and AI visibility
LumaRank connects each keyword to the AI answers it already collects, so a keyword can show two things side by side: where you rank on Google, and whether AI assistants mention you when someone asks about the same thing.
- The AI visibility column shows, per assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini), whether it cites your brand for the matching question. Green means you're mentioned (with your spot in the answer when available); grey means you aren't.
- Keywords that aren't connected to a question yet show Track in AI. Click it to connect the keyword: link it to one of your existing scan questions, or create a new question from the keyword (creating one uses a question from your plan).
- LumaRank connects new keywords to a fitting question automatically when it can. If none fits, the keyword stays Google only until you connect it or add a question that matches.
- Use the All / In AI / Google only filter above the table to focus on keywords that already show AI visibility, or on the ones that don't yet.
AI visibility fills in from your most recent scan of the connected question, so run a scan to see it move.
Comparing against competitors
The Competitors vs us tab shows how you stack up against your competitors on both fronts: where each one ranks on Google for your keywords, and how often the AI mentions each brand. It also flags gaps: keywords where a competitor ranks and you don't.
A few things to know about the data:
- A competitor's Google rank needs its website. We read a competitor's position from the same Google check we run for you, matched by its domain. If a competitor has no website set, we can only show its AI mentions, and its Google columns stay blank. Add the competitor's website in your company or project settings to add its Google rank.
- Competitor Google positions appear after a rank check. They fill in on the next daily check, or right away if you use Refresh.
- AI share of voice appears after a scan. The AI mention numbers come from your most recent scan of each matched question, so run a scan to populate them.
Discovering competitor keywords
From the Competitors tab you can discover the keywords a competitor ranks for that you don't track yet. Pick a competitor, run a discovery, and review the keywords with their rank and search volume, then add the ones worth tracking with a single click.
Discovery is part of the competitor add-on: each account gets a monthly pool of discoveries, and you can top it up if you need more. It only counts a discovery when it returns results.
Turning tracking on
Rank tracking is off until you turn it on. Add your keywords first, then use the Activate tracking button on the status strip. While it's off the strip reads Inactive; once active it checks your keywords daily and you can Pause it any time to stop the checks.
How to act on it
- Start with the Keyword opportunities list: it orders your keywords by where the biggest wins are, and each one tells you what to do.
- Watch the Δ 7d column for keywords that are slipping and address them before they fall further.
- Use Add keywords to paste a list (one per line) or import a CSV. Not sure what to track? Hit Generate with AI to get relevant keyword suggestions based on your business, then click the ones you want. You can search, select several at once, and remove them in bulk from the table.
When it appears
Once tracking is active, ranks fill in after the first daily check runs, so a keyword shows its position within about a day. Your plan sets how many keywords you can track per project; you can always upgrade to track more.
