Brand understanding

Brand understanding: how accurately AI describes what you do, and how to sharpen that description so you are not confused.

What brand understanding means

Brand understanding is how accurately AI can describe what you do, who you're for, and what makes you different. High understanding means assistants get your basics right; low understanding means they're vague, generic, or simply wrong about you.

How to read it

It's one of the signals behind your AI Visibility score. When it's low, AI is usually guessing your basics from thin or unclear pages, because your own site doesn't state them plainly.

What to do

  • On your homepage and about page, say in plain language what you do, who it's for, and how you're different. No jargon, no filler.
  • Give machines the same facts cleanly with structured data (see LLM optimization signals).
  • Back it up with clear documentation or a help center so AI can explain how your product actually works.

The goal: whatever an assistant says about you should be something you'd be happy to see in an answer.

When AI doesn't recognize you

Sometimes an assistant names your brand only to say it has no information about it, or it describes a different brand with a similar name as if it were you. That's worse than a lukewarm mention: a model that can't tell who you are can't recommend you, and it may point readers to a look-alike instead.

If this shows up, make your identity unmistakable: state plainly on your own site what you do, keep your name consistent across your profiles, and get named on third-party pages (reviews, directories, articles) so assistants learn who you are and stop confusing you with someone else.
